What is VPN and Types of VPN

Types of VPN
In present day , everyone is uses Facebook , twitter and many other social networking websites , due to this websites PRIVACY becomes so publicly , it's almost impossible to make it truly private. So here comes the need of VPN ( Virtual Private Network). VPN setups private tunnel between user and vpn-service provider , so when user browse on web , every website gets different IP address than actual IP address of user  and it's almost impossible to hacker to track you.

There are few types of VPN depending upon it's services.
  • PPTP VPN
  • Site-to-Site VPN
  • L2TP VPN
  • MPLS VPN
  • HYBRID VPN

 PPTP VPN

In virtual private network PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) is type of VPN. This method was introduced by Microsoft and I will suggest not to use this VPN service because it does't give any security or encapsulation to user data being transferred or received. Using this method is exactly same as inviting hacker to steal your information. It was used back in the days when there wasn't much security available to data. PPTP uses TCP (transmission control protocol) and GRE (Generic Routing Encapsulation).

Site-to-Site VPN

Site to Site VPN is configured if two branches of any company or same company wants to merge or they wants to operate from one place. It is configured on remotely and a bridge type structure created between these two networks. Data is encrypted and passed to reciever with proper authentication. It also provide confidentiality and Data Integrity , since it verify that no bit of data in packet is lost or manipulated.

L2TP VPN

In Virtual Private Network L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) used to provide VPN or part of it. It doesn't provide any encryption or confidentiality. It relies on  encryption protocol. L2TP merges best features from two best tunneling protocols , one is from microsoft (PPTP) and one is from cisco systems (L2F-layer 2 farwarding protocol). It's an extention to PPP protocol that enables ISPs to provide vpn.

MPLS VPN

MPLS VPN consists of multiple websites connected to each other through Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is used to deliver packets over multiple protocols such as Internet protocol , Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM-Dedicated connection switching organizes digital data into 53-cell unit) , Frame relay (packet switching telecommunication service). A virtual private network (VPN) uses shared public telecom infrastructure, such as the Internet, to provide secure access to remote offices and users in a cheaper way than an owned or leased line.

HYBRID VPN

Hybrid VPN consists on VPN inside VPN or you can say vpn of VPN. It may also consists of VPN merged by two different  type of VPN. In a hybrid VPN, the secure VPN may be a subset of the trusted VPN , such as if one department in a corporation runs its own secure VPN over the corporate
trusted VPN. For any given pair of address in a hybrid VPN, the VPN administrator
must be able to definitively say whether or not traffic between those two addresses is
part of the secure VPN.
